Feature Friday: Latex

Today, dear internet, you get to reap the benefits of my curiosity as it pertains to latex. Lately, I've been asked a few times about latex, and the care thereof, and have thus been confronted with how little I know about this material. So today, I'm doing research, and sharing that research with you.

Latex is a fantastic material, and many people even have a fetish for it. Really, who can blame them? Latex can be glossy, skintight, restrictive, gripping, doll-like, and really stands out in a crowd. PVC and vinyl are other materials that are known for similar qualities and are similarly often the subject of fetishism. Notably, bondage tape is made of PVC, and is a fairly affordable way to explore a personal interest in this branch of fetish. Latex fetishism is often associated with BDSM and/or medical play.

Here are some tips for taking care of your latex:
  • avoid oils (household, mechanical, and even remnants on leather from production)
    • yes, this includes oil-based lubricants
  • avoid excess water and sweat; after washing, make sure it has sufficient time to dry
  • don't be out in the sun or near strong heat for long periods of times
  • nicotine and metal (including pennies) can stain latex
  • mind your nails when putting on latex, and beware sharp edges
  • wash in lukewarm water with a bit of shampoo or baby shampoo; rinse off with fresh water, and hang to dry (ensure the inside dries out properly as well)
    • wash within 8 hours of use if at all possible
  • store in a dry, dark area; hang or carefully fold to avoid creasing
    • light / white latex needs to be stored away from coloured clothing, as it will pick up the colours
    • it can even pick up colour from coloured plastic, such as a colourful hanger or plastic bag
  • silicone oil (such as Pjur Cult Ultrashine) will shine your latex, and can help you when getting into your latex clothing
    • cornstarch is also recommended to help you get into your latex clothing, as unlike baby powder or many other powders, cornstarch does not turn into a paste when moist
